Oberleutnant Otto Kissenberth by Ivan Berryman. (GS)

Oberleutnant Otto Kissenberth by Ivan Berryman. (GS)

When pilots took off from the respective airfields in the 1914/18 war, they would rarely know what lay ahead. For Otto Kissenberth, the 12th October 1916 was to be a baptism of fire. Flying Fokker D.II 540/16, he scored his first three victories in quick succession, shooting down two Maurice Farmans and a Breguet V, as shown here. Unusual among fighter pilots of the time for the simple reason that he wore spectacles, Kissenberth went on to score an eventual 20 victories and survived the war, only to be killed whilst mountaineering in 1919.

Lancasters of 617 Sqn Dambusters get airborne from their Scampton base at the start of their journey to the Ruhr Valley on the night of 16th May 1943 under the codename Operation Chastise. These are aircraft of the First Wave, led by Wing Commander Guy Gibson, the Second Wave having already departed some ten minutes earlier to negotiate a more northerly route to their targets. On this momentous night, both the Möhne and Eder dams were successfully breached, whilst the Sorpe was also hit, but without serious damage. Of the nineteen aircraft that took part in the mission, eleven returned safely.

Providing vital support to the Pedestal convoy in 1942, No.248 Sqn were in action from their base on the island of Malta when, on 21st August, Sgt Ron Hammond destroyed a probable two aircraft in a single sortie. Flying Bristol Beaufighter T4843 (WR-X), he first dispatched a Ju88 and then found himself on the tail of a Fiat BR.20. Approaching on the enemy's right quarter, Hammond shot up the BR.20's starboard engine, the raking fire ripping through the wing and along the fuselage, eventually tearing off the port tailfin, which spun away, perilously close to his own aircraft. The Fiat was seen to spin out of control, plunging into the sea below.
