Handley Page 0/400s by Ivan Berryman. (B)

Handley Page 0/400s by Ivan Berryman. (B)

For so large a machine, production of the Handley Page 0/400 was considerable with over 400 examples being delivered by the time of the Armistice in 1918. Its first missions were carried out during April of that year, operating both during daylight and by night. Here, three machines are being readied for a sortie. As final checks are completed on the nearest aircraft, some last minute engine maintenance is being carried out on a similar machine in the middle distance. The furthest example is being towed, with its vast wings folded, to the dispersal.

On the very day that half the Italian battle fleet was destroyed in Taranto harbour, the Corpo Aereo Italiano mounted their biggest raid on mainland Britain from their base in Belgium with twenty Fiat BR.20s bombers, escorted by almost one hundred fighters taking to the air on 11th November 1940. Bad weather over Belgium forced more than half of the fighter cover to abort and return to base, leaving just 42 Fiat CR.42 biplanes to supply cover. Hurricanes of 46 and 257 Sqns were scrambled to repel the attackers, the Italians suffering terrible losses with no British casualties being reported. Here, 46 Sqn Hurricanes claim a BR.20, this one jointly destroyed by Pilot Officer Leggett, Pilot Officer Hedley and Sergeant Walker.

The afternoon of 25th July 1940 was a desperate one for the already exhausted fighter pilots of the RAF defending the South coast of England. As convoy CW8 made its way through the English Channel, sixty JU.87 Stukas and forty JU.88 bombers launched a brutal attack on the ships below, backed up by fighter cover of over 50 Messerscmitt Bf.109s. Eight Spitfires of 64 Sqn (Kenley) were scrambled, together with twelve Spitfires of 54 Sqn (Hornchurch) and Hurricanes of 111 Sqn from Croydon. The British pilots found themselves massively outnumbered, but nevertheless put up a spirited fight against the teeming enemy. This painting shows Spitfires of 54 Sqn entering the fray, the pilots scattering as they choose their targets and go after the JU.87s. To the right of this, Bf.109Es of JG.26 are roaring in to join battle, whilst Adolf Gallands aircraft engages a Hurricane of 111 Sqn.

After sustaining two heavy attacks by enemy night fighters, killing two crew members and injuring Reid in the head, shoulders and hands. He carried on to the target, dropping accurately his bomb load. Navigating back by Pole Star and Moon, he lost consciousness on occasions due to blood loss. He managed to find his way Shipdharn. Upon landing the undercarriage collapsed but luckily did not catch fire. For his exploits that night he was awarded the Victoria Cross.
