Phonix D.I by Ivan Berryman. (APB)

Phonix D.I by Ivan Berryman. (APB)

Resplendent in the striking colours of the Austro-Hungarian Navy, a pair of Phonix D.I fighters are depicted on patrol in the late Spring of 1918. Although largely unpopular with pilots, the type acquitted itself well in service, possessing a superior rate of climb to the Albatross D.III, superb stability and a very low stall speed. A significant number of victories were achieved on the type and many examples were still in service at the end of the war in November 1918.

This Week's Half Price Art

With their brightly coloured checkertail tails there was no mistaking the P.51 Mustangs of the 325th Fighter Group. Escorting B-24s over Austria in August 1944, tangled with a group of Fw190 fighters. The ensuing dogfight spiraled down below the mountain peaks as Herky Green led the Checkertails in a low-level chase. Herky nails one Fw190. Behind him his pilots will take out the two Fw190. When all is done this day the 325th will be credited with 15 enemy fighters destroyed.

A pair of Spitfire Mk.IXEs of 611 Squadron make their way home from a patrol during the summer of 1942. At this time 611 Squadron were based at Kenley and were the first squadron to receive the new Mk.IX putting it on equal terms, for the first time, with the formidable Focke-Wulf 190.

The flight to the Ruhr dams on the night of 16th/17th May 1943 as part of Operation Chastise was fraught with peril as each wave of three aircraft hugged the ground across Holland and into Germany to avoid detection. Having flown particularly low to avoid the flak and searchlights near Dulmen, ED864 (AJ-B) piloted by Flt Lt W Astell sadly hit high tension wires and immediately burst into flames, the aircraft rearing into the air before hitting the ground, it's Upkeep mine exploding moments later, killing all the crew instantly. These were the first victims of the Dambuster raids, the first of eight aircraft that failed to return of the nineteen that took off on this heroic mission.

Mustang P51 Nooky Booky IV flown by Captain Leonard Kit Carson of the 362nd Fighter Squadron, 357th Fighter Group, giving fighter escort top cover protection to the B17s of 381st Bomb Group, returning after a raid in Germany, January 1944. Kit Carson ended the war as top scorer of the 357th with 18.5 aerial victories in the last 6 months of the war.

Chinook helicopters based at RAF Odiham approach the landing site on the Al Faw peninsula, Iraq on the night of 20th March 2003 to insert Royal Marines to secure the oil terminal. Operation HOUGHTON, as it was known, was part of the early stages of Operation TELIC, the campaign to rid the country of Saddam Hussein. The strength of the enemy ground forces was unknown. The formation of 5 aircraft inserted 200 Royal Marines in 3 waves in 2 minutes and was led by Squadron Leader Steve Carr flying Bravo November, the same aircraft that was so successful during the Falklands War in 1982. For leading the assault Squadron Leader Carr was awarded with the Distinguished Flying Cross

The Red Baron in one of his Albatross scouts instead of the Fokker DR.1 Triplane with which he is more often associated. History records that no fewer than 56 of his victims fell to the guns of a succession of Albatros scouts, so I have depicted him here flying D.III Nr.2253/17 in which he claimed (among others) victory number 52, his last in this aircraft before taking some long-overdue leave. He went on to become the highest scoring ace of World War 1 with 80 confirmed victories to his credit before his untimely death in April 1918.

A Ministry of Supply contract issued in the mid 1950s resulted in the unique Saro SR.53 supersonic interceptor fighter, which incorporated a mixed powerplant consisting of an Armstrong Siddeley Viper turbojet mounted above a liquid-propellant De Havilland Spectre rocket motor. First flown in 1957, the aircraft displayed good characteristics, but was ultimately not put into production.
