Mellish Walking Across Ground, Which Was Being Swept By Machine Gun Fire, To Tend The Wounded. During heavy fighting at St. Eloi on March 27th 1916, and the two following days the Rev. Edward Noel Mellish journeyed under continuous and heavy fire, between the original British trenches and those captured, in order to tend and rescue wounded men. He brought in ten on the first day from ground swept by machine gun fire, and three were actually killed while he was dressing their wounds. His battalion was relieved on the second day, but he went back and brought in twelve more men. On the night of the third day he took charge of some volunteers and returned to the trenches to rescue the remaining wounded.
