On a subsequent occasion, Captain Davies with another officer, Lieutenant Richardson, bravely volunteered to cross the open ground to the trench on his left, a distance of sixty or eighty yards, to assist the wounded. As the two officers left the trench, they were joined by a young second lieutenant. In the open they met with a storm of bullets from rifles and machine guns, and the second lieutenant was wounded in the left leg. After attending to him, Captain Davies came near the trench and crossed a road swept by machine gun fire. The ditches on either side were crossed by planks, and on stepping over the first, he rushed across the road and leaped over the second ditch. His escape was marvellous, as bullets in several places tore his coat. He then accomplished the task of attending to the wounded with the greatest skill and devotion, and his splendid service was deservedly rewarded with the M.C.
