Skinner had received a head wound early in the day, but at three oclock in the afternoon he gallantly offered to carry a dispatch to Divisional Headquarters and a message to reinforcements, which were believed to be stationed in a hollow near by. He crawled to the end of the trenches, and then, a mark for snipers, dashed across a stretch of fairly level ground, which ended in a gully. On crawling into the gully a terrible sight lay before him. The dead and wounded were on every side, and the plight of the latter was piteous. There was no trace of the reinforcements, and as he lay on the ground a shell burst just above him. Seeing it would be unsafe to remain there any longer, he returned to Divisional Headquarters and reported what he had seen. Skinner was deservedly rewarded with the D.C.M. for bravery and devotion to duty.
